Muhammed Jailani

Overcoming The Odds One At A Time

Covid-19 proved to be a real challenge for 40-year-old Muhammed Jailani. Before the pandemic, the father of two boys aged 7 and 8, used to work as a construction worker while his wife worked part-time as a production worker. With both their incomes, they were able to manage their finances while also providing for their sons. But things changed during the circuit breaker, when schools and workplaces were closed down. Jailani was forced to look for a new job as construction work had stopped. On the other hand, his wife had to stop working to take care of their sons, especially her eldest who has mild autism.

While things took a positive turn with Jailani finding a new job as a security officer, his wife and he were finding it difficult to manage the family expenses with his reduced income. The biggest worry – affording their sons’ school fees. “We were struggling quite a bit during circuit breaker, and were not sure who to reach out to for help. That’s when I came across SINDA’s Facebook post on a support package and I immediately told my husband to approach the organisation,” said Mrs Jailani.

The Jailanis approached SINDA hoping just to receive financial assistance, but after noticing how stressful the family situation was, they were referred to the SINDA Family Service Centre and offered counselling to help them with their worries.

While SINDA’s Resilience Scheme and Care Package assisted greatly, it was the counselling that had the largest impact upon Jailani:

“I got to speak about how I felt and what was stressing me, and officers at SINDA listened patiently and shared with me on how to better plan my finances and helped me understand the importance of taking care of myself as well. These sessions really helped me to manage my stress and together with the financial help, my family is managing things much better today!”
